What is a .qif file?

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a line-oriented plain-text format for exchanging bank and investment transactions. Each field is one line prefixed by a single-letter code (D for date, T for amount, P for payee) and records are separated by a caret on its own line. It carries no opening balance, no currency and no account identifier, which is why importers must be told what they are reading.
