What is a .jp2 file?

image/jp2

JP2 is the JPEG 2000 container format, a wavelet-based successor to JPEG that never displaced it on the web but is standard in archival, medical and geospatial imaging. It supports both reversible (lossless) and irreversible (lossy) coding in the same file format, plus arbitrary bit depths and region-of-interest decoding.

How to use a .jp2 file

Use an example JP2 file to test whether an image pipeline handles JPEG 2000 at all, and whether it distinguishes the lossless from the lossy coding mode. Many readers that accept the extension silently fall back to a thumbnail or fail on the reversible variant.
